The Lodge Herd of Pedigree Limousins was founded in 1980 at Lodge Farm, Great Clifton, Cumbria by Ian’s father the late Bill Callion. Our first Limousin bull was purchased in 1979 from Lumbylaw (Mr. Richard Oates), this was followed by the purchase of females from top herds such as Goldies, Uplands and Tanhill. Over the years it has always been our policy to use top quality bulls whether by AI or natural service, hence the depth of breeding in the cows we have today. We have always bred for confirmation, shape and temperament and we would like to think our herd reflects this. Our current batch of 30 cows have been formed from a nucleus of 10 heifers and 2 cows brought up from Cumbria, after the major reduction of the Lodge Herd in July 1993. This was added to by a number of Ronick cows belonging to Wendy. The main influence on the herd from these original cows has been from Ronick Fumby who died in January 2008, aged 18 years old. Out of the 30 cows currently in the herd a third of them are related to her. More information on our current cows in the herd can be found on our “cow families” page. In the past few years we have imported a number of animals from France, from various herds including Champeval, Patureau, Benoit, Dessalas and Earl Lagautriere. More information on the individual animals imported will be published on our website soon. The herd is in a four year TB testing area and we have been members of the SAC Premium Health Scheme since February 2001 monitoring for Johne’s disease. In January 2008 we passed our 2nd qualifying test for Johnes Disease.
