Breeding History |
|
The Lodge Limousin herd was founded at Lodge Farm, Great Clifton, Workington, Cumbria in 1980 by Ian's father the late Bill Callion. Following the purchase in 1979 of our first Limousin bull form Mr Richard Oates (Lumbylaw), and thereafter purchases of females from top herds such as "Goldies", "Uplands" and "Tanhill". It has always been our policy to use top quality bulls hence the depth of breeding in the cows we have today. Over the years we have used "Goldies Unionjack" by "Osiris", "Goldies Atem" by "Sebastien", "Uplands Batman" by "Talent", "Cloughhead Charlie" by "Rake Terence", "Ronick Luke" by "Broadmeadows Cannon" and our current herd sire "Ronick Urinocco" by "Ronick Rascard". Luke has recently been sold to Mr Peter Edmondson, Seathwaite Farm, Keswick, Cumbria although we have retained the semen rights.
Our current batch of 40 cows have been formed from a nucleus of 10 heifers and 2 cows brought up by Ian from Cumbria, after the major reduction of the Lodge Herd in July 1993. This was added to by a number of Wendy's cows from the Ronick Herd. Showing has always been for us a very enjoyable part of breeding Limousin cattle and over the years we have had quite a number of successes for further details go to the Show Results page. The Lodge herd has won the Scottish Medium Herd Competition six times in 1996, 1997, 2000, 2002, 2003 & 2004 and were runners-up in 1998 and 1999. All our cattle are Signet weight recorded and we are members of the SAC Premium Cattle Health Scheme where we have no positive breeding females in our sixth test for Johnes Disease. |
